The Turtle Conservation Program is ideal for enthusiastic and ecologically sensitive volunteers who want to ensure Costa Rica’s turtle population does not become further endangered. Projects take place on beaches on both the Caribbean and Pacific coast. They aim to protect turtle nests from human poachers and to help manage sustainable egg-harvesting programs. Although variable, volunteer activities generally include working in hatcheries with local staff to harvest eggs, beach cleaning, night patrolling, counting turtles, and collecting eggs to keep them away from predators.
In addition to enthusiasm, a willingness to learn about new cultures, and a strong work ethic, volunteers must be in good physical condition to perform hard, manual labor.
Arrival and Orientation
You will be greeted at the San Jose International Airport by the local coordinator or representative, who will transport you to your accommodations, in either Heredia or Santa Barbara. Volunteers who arrive by car or are already in Costa Rica will be picked up at a meeting point coordinated before your arrival.
After completing orientation and the project introduction, you will join your Turtle Conservation Project on either the Pacific or Caribbean Coast. Orientation is conducted by the local staff and covers topics such as:
- Costa Rican Customs
- Rules and Expectations
- Safety and Introduction to your project and placement
Volunteers are provided with three cooked meals a day at the host family house. Local Costa Rican dishes are a fusion of international cuisines, commonly made from rice, vegetables, beans, meat, chicken, etc.
During Your Free Time
Volunteers are free to explore, shop at local markets, or, in other words, be a tourist in their free time. Going to the beach is a great weekend getaway; Costa Rica has over 1,000 miles of gorgeous white-and-black sand beaches. Whatever terrain you’re seeking, you’re bound to find unparalleled natural beauty, active volcanoes, rainforests, and a wide range of national parks and ecotourism.
Upon arrival in Costa Rica, you will be staying with a host family in Heredia or Santa Barbara for the first few days. After orientation and project introductions are completed, you will then be transferred to a volunteer house or a ranger house closer to your assigned project near the Pacific or Caribbean Coast. Accommodations in the volunteer or ranger house are dormitory style, so you will be sharing rooms with other volunteers.
Volunteer projects are located around five to six hours from the city of San Jose. Volunteers in this program work in beaches along the Pacific Coast and the Caribbean coast. All volunteers joining this program should be prepared to do hard manual work and should be in good physical condition.
You will have a considerable impact on the mission of this program when you participate in the following volunteer activities:
- General infrastructure maintenance
- Tourist attention
- Control Walks
- Monitoring of the nesting activity (species identification, Biometric information and marking among several others)
- Protection and monitoring of eggs
- Liberation of newborn turtles
- Obtaining information on the remains of the nest
- Beach cleaning when you see garbage
- Separation of recyclables ( plastic, glass, cardboard etc.) from the garbage

When arriving at the center you are warmly welcomed and shown around. It is a lot to take in because the center is pretty big and there are a lot of animals.
Working hours are from 8 till 12 and half past 2 till 5, which is a good amount. Every day the animals need to be feed and there cages to be cleaned and when that is done we work on extra work, which is really diverse.
I have loved every day of my stay here and that is partly because of the animals and of the amazing people of yana cocha. +more

The trip was really awesome. It was my first time to go outside Europe and this project was the ideal thing to do for the first time! It is a good combination between different volunteering projects, travelling, and being with international people. The week in Mr. Lee's elephant village and the day in the Khao Yai national park were the absolute highlights for me. Beside that, we had a great tour guide in Kwang. She took care of us really well, arranged everything for us and did literally anything to help us. Big shout out to Kwang! I had an amazing time in Thailand.
Kwang is the best! She really took care of everything. When something went wrong with the beach extension, we had one day less at Koh Phangan, she kept us informed as good as she could.
I enjoyed all the projects actually. The childcare and elephants were the most exciting for me. Luckily we could stay another day in the elephant village, because me and two others decided not to go to Cambodia. It was a pity that the childcare was only two days, those kids were amazing. +more
