Medical Internship Abroad in Chiang Mai, Thailand

Chiang Mai, Thailand Health & Medicine

Program

Description

Thailand is becoming world-renowned as a global medical center, and people from all over Asia and the West travel here for the affordable but expert medical care. It’s no surprise, therefore, that the medical internship in Thailand is such a popular volunteer travel experience for many pre-med, medical, and nursing students.

Your time with the volunteer medical internship in Chiang Mai will be an unparalleled opportunity for you to see and experience the life of a medical practitioner, and give you great insight into the medical practices of Thailand. Along with having an opportunity to get hands-on experience in a hospital setting, you'll also have plenty of time to explore and play while you're here, and also have opportunities to see famous sites, discover a new culture, meet new people, and make memories that will stick with you for many years to come.

The medical internship in Chiang Mai in northern Thailand is a once in a lifetime type of opportunity for students in medical school, nursing school, and pre-med programs. Not only will you have a chance to experience life in a real medical setting, but you'll also be paired with a full-time doctor whom you'll shadow and learn from. You're also guaranteed the best learning experience possible because it will just be you and maybe one other intern shadowing your doctor. Moreover, all the doctors have an excellent command of English, so you can feel free to ask questions and make comments as necessary.

Like other hospitals in Thailand, the one in Chiang Mai is staffed with highly qualified doctors and expert staff and equipped with all the newest medical equipment. You'll be at the hospital between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. every day between Monday and Friday, and while you won’t typically be required to volunteer on evenings or weekends, there may be some special circumstances where you'll have opportunities at the hospital outside your regular volunteer hours as well.

There are many departments within the hospital, as well as a number of services that are offered on-site. You'll have the opportunity to choose which clinical areas you’d like to focus your energies on and which departments you'd like to spend supplemental time learning about. The departments within the hospital include:

· Biochemistry

· Family and community medicine

· Orthopedics

· Emergency

· Radiology

· Dental

· Rehabilitation

· Surgery

· Physical therapy

There are also other departments, such as ophthalmology and otolaryngology, that are only open to students studying in those particular fields of medicine. Moreover, there are also departments where you'll be paired with nurses instead of doctors, and those include pediatrics and general nursing. There's also the anatomy department, which only accepts one intern per month, and the same goes for the pediatrics department.

There are many things to do in and around Chiang Mai during your free time in the evenings and on weekends. Some of the favorite pastimes of former volunteers include taking Thai cooking classes and Thai massage courses. There are also fantastic restaurants in the city that feature both traditional Thai and international cuisines. On weekends, you'll have lots of time to explore the surrounding areas as well, such as Pai, Chiang Rai, or even Bangkok, which is accessible by plane.

Impact

In general, you'll be of service to the doctors, nurses, administrative staff, and patients during your time at the hospital, and you'll have a hands-on experience that will leapfrog you into your medical career in a way that few of your peers will have experienced. While volunteering, you'll be observing your doctor, participating in rounds, helping with files and administrative duties, assisting with routine professional responsibilities, and taking on other tasks. You may also be invited to participate in a more hands-on way, but that will depend on a variety of factors, including:

· Your education and experience

· The length of the internship

· Your comfort level

· The permission of the attending doctor

· The consent of the hospital administrative staff

For example, if you're a medical or nursing student in your final year of study or who has already completed school, you'll probably have more opportunities to get involved than if you're still pre-med or in the first years of your medical or nursing degree.

Field conditions

Thailand is a beautiful and tropical country, and it’s best to come prepared with the right clothes and travel gear. The clothes you'll want to bring are modest but lightweight outfits that cover a lot of skin but doesn’t make you too hot. You don’t need to wear suits to the hospital, but you should be aiming to dress in smart/casual attire. For evening and weekend adventures, you'll want t-shirts, jeans, shorts, and other lightweight clothes. Sandals are a good idea for when it’s really hot and humid, but you'll also want some smart footwear to manage the mountainous terrain. To keep the bugs and sun at bay, make sure you pack lots of insect repellent and sunscreen. Chiang Mai is generally a very safe city for tourists, but be prepared by paying attention to your local coordinator during orientation, and following all safety tips and guidelines.

Arrival and orientation

You'll arrive in Chiang Mai on the Friday before your volunteer shifts are about to start, and when you get to Chiang Mai International Airport, you'll be picked up by a local coordinator and driven to your accommodation. Or, you can also arrange a different pickup location if you're already going to be in the city, but please note that pickups are only between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.

After having the evening to settle in, meet your fellow volunteers, and get a good night’s sleep, you'll have a two-day orientation before starting your volunteer work. The orientation will include basic information about the city, cultural information regarding the language, proper behavior, and appropriate greetings, as well as details about where to go for food, money, and the best sites in town for travelers to see. Following orientation, there will be a tour of the city to familiarize you with important sites, amenities, and destinations.
