Travel to Arusha, Tanzania and volunteer in a medical clinic, dispensary, or hospital in this program that's excellent for pre-med, medical, and nursing students as well as professionals. Learn about Tanzania's medical sector and make a difference in a developing country. Dentistry placements also are available - be sure to note this on your application if dentistry is something you may be interested in learning more about. Arrival and Orientation

You'll arrive to Kilimanjaro International Airport, where a representative will meet you and help you transfer to Arusha - you also can choose to take the bus from Nairobi and be picked up at the station in Arusha. Once you are onsite, a coordinator will provide an orientation covering safety, location, transport, things to see in the area, and much more. After that, you will learn more about the project and your role in it.


During your time in Arusha, you will live in a volunteer hostel with shared rooms and comfortable facilities. You also can choose to live with a host family for a truly immersive experience. You will be provided with three meals per day, with breakfast and dinner provided at the house, and lunch generally provided at your program site. Food here usually consists of salads, sandwiches, ugali, chapatti, chai tea, bread and rice, and vegetables and fruits.

Field Conditions

As a volunteer on this medical and healthcare program, you can expect to mainly shadow a local professional and assist him or her wherever needed. Depending on your experience, you may be able to assist with basic tasks such as suturing wounds and giving vaccinations. You also will be able to assist patients with some of their activities, and also providing daily administrative support and with triage at the hospital or clinic.

Your Impact

The amount of hands-on assistance that you will be able to provide is dependent on your background and qualifications. However, during your stay in Arusha, you will have the opportunity to learn about healthcare and medical practices from local professionals, and be able to provide basic care and companionship to patients in need. Whether you are providing direct assistance while in Tanzania, or learning how to utilize those practices and knowledge later in your career, you will be able to make a positive impact with what you have learned for years to come.
