The Medical Volunteering Program in Peru is an unforgettable opportunity to shadow medical practitioners, assist in providing compassionate care to the indigent, and to learn about the medical practices of Peru. Volunteers make a considerable contribution to staff working in Peru’s hospitals, health clinics and medical centers. The community you’ll serve lives in the poor and underprivileged areas of Cusco. This project is particularly suitable for premed and medical students who want to gain valuable clinical experience by working with professionals abroad. Depending on your medical experience and Spanish language skills, you may be asked to assist with various procedures such as suturing wounds, giving vaccinations, helping with taking vital signs of patients, being involved in the daily procedures of medical centers, observing or directly providing various sorts of assistance to existing doctors and nurses. Along with having an opportunity to get hands-on experience in a hospital setting, you'll also have plenty of time to explore and play while you're here. You’ll have opportunities to see famous sites like the Sacred Valley or the world famous Macchu Picchu, discover a new culture, meet new people, and make memories that will stick with you for many years to come.

Arrival and Orientation

Volunteers are greeted at the Cusco Airport by the local coordinator or representative, and transported to their accommodations. Volunteers who arrive by car or already in Peru will be picked up at a meeting point coordinated beforehand or at the bus station. A half day orientation will be provided by the local staff. During the welcome orientation, staff will cover: cultural considerations; key locations; getting around in Cusco; safety concerns; and important information about volunteer placements.

Volunteers are provided accommodations with local host families. By staying with a host family, you will experience the local culture, customs, and Peruvian way of living. Living with a typical Peruvian family is one of the best ways to immerse yourself in the culture and improve your Spanish. Volunteers share bedrooms with other volunteers. The accommodations are clean and comfortable, and most host family homes have 2 bathrooms with hot showers. Some houses have WiFi and cable TV.

Volunteers are provided with three cooked meals a day (Monday- Saturday) at the host family house. Meals vary from day to day and generally include soups, vegetable salad, rice, potatoes, juice, dessert etc.

Here is a typical meal schedule:

Breakfast - 07:00 am to 08:00 am

Lunch - 01:00 pm to 02:00 pm ( Lunch will be eaten at the placement site on volunteer days.)

Dinner - 07:00 pm to 08:00 pm

Field Conditions

Volunteers mainly work in medical clinics which provide care and treatment to the people residing in the poor and underprivileged areas of Cusco.

Cusco is located in southeastern Peru. Considered a World Heritage site, Cusco is visited by nearly two millions people annually who come to explore its archaeological treasures.

Cusco has a subtropical highland climate with a dry season from May to August, and a wet season that lasts from December to March. Cusco is generally considered dry and temperate, with temperatures usually ranging from 32.4 to 69.6 °F. Layers of clothing are recommended so that you can adjust to variations in temperatures throughout the day; the temperature drops considerably at night.

Your Impact

Volunteers are relied upon to assist the medical professionals in a myriad of ways. Depending on your education, skills, and training, you'll be assigned tasks like:

- Suturing wounds

- Giving vaccinations

- Taking rounds of the wards

- Maintaining files

- Routine patient checkups: measuring blood pressure, checking for fever, etc.

At the discretion of the doctors, you may be able to assist during critical surgeries and operations, but you will not be asked to do anything you are not qualified to do.

Please note: the tasks assigned to you will depend not only your expertise but also on your knowledge of Spanish.
