Volunteer to Teach IT and Computer Skills in Ghana

Koforidua, Ghana Education

Become an IT and computer education volunteer in Koforidua, Ghana, teaching basic skills and computer literacy to high school students. You don’t need official ICT certification as long as you have experience using computers and wish to share your knowledge to students, helping them to broaden their horizons and gain employment upon graduation. A few ways that you'll help include assisting students with basic computer skills, typing and general functionality, and how to use the internet for research. You’ll also teach students how to use industry-standard software, including Microsoft Office. You are invited to share any advanced skills you have, including programming, animation, audio creation, and design and image manipulation with Photoshop.

Computer literacy is an important skill in Ghana, a country with a goal to be a developed nation by the year 2029. You can help with the growing need for IT and computer proficiency as the number of jobs in the tourism industry increases. Work with high school students in underprivileged areas, sharing your knowledge and helping students expand their employment prospects.

Field conditions

Volunteers are encouraged to bring educational software and other computer-related equipment and materials to use as teaching aids. You’ll work from 8:00am to 2:00pm Monday through Thursday, assisting ICT teachers with hardware setup and teaching and in the computer lab. Some students haven't had experience with computers, so you'll need to be patient and offer one-on-one lessons to have a positive impact. Schools are a 20-minute bus ride or a short walk from the volunteer dormitory. With three days off each week, you'll have the opportunity to visit the heritage sites at Cape Coast, and take a safari to see wildlife. One week of local language class is included.

Arrival and orientation

Fly in to Kotoka International Airport (ACC) in Accra, the capital of Ghana, and be transferred to Koforidua. Volunteers are assigned a dedicated coordinator based in-country, who leads pre-arrival and orientation, and is personally available to you daily for the duration of your program to assist you, answer any questions, and provide information and support.
