Description

Overview

Volunteer to teach English to children in rural schools and through community classes in the region of San Ramón! Help learners develop their English language skills and improve their spelling, punctuation, and grammar. You’ll need to speak intermediate Spanish for this placement.

Arrival and Orientation

The nearest major airport is Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) in San Jose, Costa Rica. Make your way to San Ramón, or airport pick-up is available for $75. Volunteers are assigned a dedicated coordinator based in-country, who leads pre-arrival and orientation, and is personally available to you daily for the duration of your program to assist you, answer any questions, and provide information and support.

Accommodations

Volunteers share safe, secure volunteer house in San Ramón -- your home away from home. The volunteer dormitory provides you with opportunity to socialize and meet like-minded travelers from around the world. Dorms are single-sex rooms with bunk beds and Western-style bathrooms. There is a modern kitchen, and there is a landline telephone, free wifi, security systems, and subsidized laundry service. The volunteer house is a few minutes' walking distance from the center of the city, within reach of restaurants, shops, and transportation. Meals are provided for breakfast and dinner, and you can prepare your own lunch or dine out.

Field Conditions

As an English speaker on a teaching program, you’ll be supervised by a qualified teacher as you create and deliver both theoretical and practical lessons. You’ll plan and carry out lessons and assist teachers in the classroom. Tasks include testing and grading students, encouraging the practice of English through one-on-one lessons and group sessions. Schools are close to the volunteer house, either a short walk away or a 30-minute bus ride. Adult classes are informal and often held at the uVolunteer dorm, allowing you to make new friends. You’ll work four days per week, and have plenty of time for travel. If you’re staying for two or three weeks, you may teach adult community classes in the evening and take community education workshops. One week of local language class is included.

Your Impact

You’ll help children and adults develop their skills in conversational English in Costa Rica, where language skills are in demand because of tourism and business. Depending upon how long you stay, you’ll work with elementary and high school students as well as adult learners.
