Volunteer to Teach English in Pedasi, Panama

Pedasi, Panama Children & Youth Development

Based in Pedasi, Panama, TeachPTY operates an English-teaching after-school program that aims to bring together international volunteers with underprivileged third grade students. Its goal is to improve English language education in elementary public schools in Panama, while enabling cross-cultural awareness between residents and volunteers.

The TeachPTY methodology follows Panama's Ministry of Education (Meduca) guidelines and is intended to complement its syllabus. Its added value is to adapt Meduca's syllabus to make English language learning more interactive and fun for students, while making it easy for volunteers to follow the program. This volunteer program is great for young professionals, college students, and recent graduates who want an unforgettable travel experience while giving back to the community that welcomes them.

Field conditions

During your stay, you will teach English to third graders in an after-school program at Plinio A. Moscoso Elementary School in Pedasi. This program focuses on third-grade students because they can learn English faster at that age than other students in the school, and they’re old enough to interact with volunteers as they practice their language skills. You can expect to teach eight to 10 hours per week, always in the afternoon, and you’re encouraged to explore Panama during your free time. The English courses have been developed in collaboration with professional English teachers and Panama’s Ministry of Education, and spread out over the academic year. TeachPTY will provide you with lesson plans and training to get you ready for your volunteer experience in Panama. To sign up, you must be between 18 and 35 years old, a native English speaker or qualified via Skype interview, and you must be flexible, creative, resourceful, hardworking, and motivated. Spanish language skills are not required, but are a plus.

Arrival and orientation

You will fly into Tocumen Airport in Panama City, where TeachPTY staff will pick you up. If you arrive on a Friday, TeachPTY will give you a city tour and drive you to Casco Viejo, where you will stay for the next two nights - after that, you will transfer to the town of Pedasi to begin your volunteer experience. If you arrive on any other day of the week, you will head straight to Pedasi.

TeachPTY aims not only to build bright futures for children in need, but also to promote cross-cultural awareness, develop a model volunteer program in the town of Pedasi that will be recognized and implemented in other rural areas of Panama, and to create a network of international volunteers willing to improve opportunities within these communities.
