Teach English to Children in Pathum Thani, Thailand

Pathum Thani, Thailand Education

Program

Description

Travel to Thailand and teach English with Plan My Gap Year! On this program, you will help Pathum Thani students aged four to five improve their English language skills through lessons, games, general interaction, and more. Through your volunteer efforts, you’ll provide an extra pair of hands to local teachers who lead overcrowded classes of 40+ students at government-run schools. As a volunteer, you’ll help with a variety of tasks, all of which can make a difference for teachers who are overburdened and unable to otherwise provide much-needed support to students who may be falling behind, or who otherwise need extra attention.

Impact

During your stay in Thailand, you will help children to improve their English language skills - a vital part of pursuing greater educational and career opportunities later. The students you’ll teach come from underprivileged backgrounds, and learning English as well as other skills is incredibly valuable. Your work as a volunteer will help set these young students up for success as they get ready to enter primary school.

Field conditions

The school that you’ll teach in has seven well-furnished and air conditioned classrooms, with a strong teacher network and overall infrastructure. The children you’ll teach come from underprivileged backgrounds, and will greatly benefit from learning English from a native speaker. You will help not only with teaching the students basic conversational skills, phonics, and other simple language skills, but you also will have the opportunity to help the local teachers improve their English.

You’re encouraged to prepare as much as possible for this program before embarking on your trip to Thailand: earning a TEFL certificate through one of PMGY’s online course can greatly improve your experience and impact on this program.

Arrival and orientation

This program starts on Saturdays. You will arrive to Suvarnabhumi International Airport on your selected start date, and be greeted by a local staff member or appointed driver holding a sign with your name on it. From there, you’ll head over to the volunteer house and spend the rest of the day relaxing before getting started on your volunteer program.

Accommodation description

Based in Pathum Thani, a safe and quiet suburb of Bangkok, the volunteer house that you’ll live in is an hour’s drive away from main tourist areas such as Koh San Road, and a 30-minute walk from the main street in Pathum Thani, where you can find restaurants, convenience stores, and ATMs. The local team also lives close by.

The house is basic but comfortable, and each room can accommodate up to 10 people. The bathrooms are western standard, and there are fans provided throughout the house, plus intermittent wifi. You’re encouraged to bring a padlock for your suitcase and store any valuables with a team member. June through September are PMGY’s busiest volunteer months, so you may be placed at an alternative location such as a nearby guest house or a different volunteer house.

Breakfast and dinner are provided throughout the week, though you should expect to prepare your own meals on weekends. Breakfast usually consists of toast, fruits, yogurt, eggs, and jam, while dinner usually is chicken, pork, fish, curry, rice, or noodles.

Founded in 2011 by volunteers for volunteers, Plan My Gap Years works with local communities in the developing world towards long-term sustainable goals. We know there is no better way to travel and make a positive impact in the world. Our structured programs create the perfect platform for you to see the world, meet like-minded people and engage in meaningful volunteer work. We have teams in the UK and in your host destinations who will support you 24/7 throughout your time with them. Furthermore, every project on our network is regularly risk-assessed by our UK team to ensure their setup is safe and that their volunteers are making a positive impact. There is also a great social element to our programs. We put you in touch with all of your fellow volunteers via Facebook before you set off. Our projects receive volunteers from around the world throughout the year, so even if you’re travelling solo, you’re going to meet heaps of people along the way.
