On this volunteer trip, you will have the opportunity to help the children of San Ramon by teaching
English and improving their speaking skills. As a volunteer, you will work with elementary school children in under-resourced classrooms to develop their conversational English language abilities to pursue better educational and career opportunities later. The goals of this program are to provide free English language lessons to the children, expose them to native English speakers to help develop their pronunciation and conversational skills, and engage in intercultural exchange.
While you do not need background experience to sign up, if you have teaching qualifications, you’ll have the chance to teach other subjects such as math or science to the children. Completing a TEFL course prior to signing up will help you better prepare for this program. You must have an understanding of Spanish to be able to communicate effectively with the teachers and students.
Arrival and Orientation
Once you arrive to San Jose, local staff will pick you up at the airport and take you to your designated project location, where you’ll receive an orientation covering the volunteering placement, the local surroundings, and who you will be working with during your stay. You’ll also learn about local customs, travel, rules and recommendations, and what to expect from your volunteer experience. After that, you will be taken to your project site, meet the project supervisor, and learn all about what you will be doing as a volunteer.
During your stay in San Ramon, you will live with a host family who will provide you with traditional Costa Rican breakfast and dinner each day. Your home will have a comfortable bed, as well as a hot shower and modern bathroom. Wifi is provided at most homes, and depending on the time of the year, you may share a room with other volunteers.
Located in the city of San Ramon, you will be in the Cordillera de Tilarán mountains 1,057 meters above sea level and only a 50-minute drive from San Jose.
During your stay, you will be able to:
- Help the teacher with planned lessons and activities
- Assist with teaching a variety of subjects
- Help children improve their conversational English skills
- Play games and read to the children in English
- Teach hygiene and life skills
- Help the children with their projects and school work
You can expect to work Monday to Friday each week at least four to six hours a day, with your typical schedule looking like this:
8:30am Walk or bus to project site
9:00am Pre-start meeting with project supervisor
9:15am Volunteering duties start, with a tea break and lunch break included throughout the day
2:00pm Volunteering duties end
2:15pm Debrief with project supervisor
2:30pm Walk or bus back to accommodation
During your evenings, you will have free time to relax, enjoy dinner, and explore the area.
During your stay on this program, you will be able to help in a variety of ways. The school that you will work with provides free English language lessons to children, which will help with their higher education and career prospects later on. Learning language skills from native speakers is a great way to improve pronunciation and conversational abilities, allowing the students to speak more fluently.

I recently returned from a trip organized by this agency and it was a mess. Not only was I taken advantage of financially but when I reached out to love volunteers they could care less and in fact accused me of being on a Witch Hunt and harassing them for support. It was very unpleasant and unprofessional. The local agency had all current volunteers unhappy with them. The man who locally oversees it lies about costs and takes money from the volunteers. If you try to confront or ask questions he will harass you on your mobile device until you see it his way. I urge you all to not go through love volunteers. Their disregard for the way volunteers are treated is unacceptable. They seem to only care until they have your money and then they do not care. +more

I am a pre-med graduate from Denmark meaning that I had no previous hands-on experience.
But I still got to observe, participate and help so many people. It was wonderful, challenging, educational and eye-opening. I learned so much about medicine, medicine in a Third World country and the Nepali culture. Words cannot describe how much I learned and developed, I enjoyed this so much. But it should be noted that this particular volunteering program is not for those who are afraid to ask questions and take initiative. Your learning and participation is your own responsibility. Noone will be there to hold your hand and explain everything to you. You must ask questions, study at home to understand the cases better, engage yourself and put in the time. The more you give, the more you get!

I have worked with other volunteer organizations and just didn't feel the level of support and caring that I have always received with Love Volunteers. +more

Everyone I encountered was friendly and appreciative, from the manager of the NGO to the fellow volunteers I was living with in the group accomodation. +more
