Description

Overview

On this volunteer trip, you will have the opportunity to help the children of Playa Jaco by teaching English and improving their speaking skills. As a volunteer, you will work as a teacher’s assistant Monday through Friday each week, providing support in classrooms that may be overcrowded and lacking adequate resources. You can help with planning lessons and organizing games and activities, particularly for younger children. This is a wonderful way to engage in intercultural exchange and improve the future education and employment prospects for local children.

Arrival and Orientation

Once you arrive to San Jose, local staff will pick you up at the airport and take you to the volunteer house in Santa Barbara de Heredia, just outside of San Jose. The volunteer house here also serves as the local team’s office.

The next day, you’ll have an orientation to help you learn more about the program and your role in it, as well as local customs, traveling, rules and recommendations, and more. From there, you’ll travel by bus to Jaco Beach, where you’ll settle into your accommodations, get familiar with the project site, and meet your project leader.

Accommodations

During your stay in Jaco Beach, you will live in a volunteer apartment with access to a bus service that can take you to the beach or into town. Rooms are usually shared with one other volunteer, and amenities include hot showers, western-style bathrooms, free wifi, two meals per day during the week. Meals are usually local vegetarian cuisine, and you’re invited to have dinner each night at local cafes or cook for yourself in the volunteer apartment kitchen. A homestay option also is available with a local host family, who will provide you with breakfast and dinner. This is a great way to immerse yourself in the local culture!

Field Conditions

Located on Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast, Jaco Beach is close to the rainforest and mountains, and is a popular site for tourists. You’ll be close to markets, nightlife, surfing, shops and cafes, and much more. During your stay, you will volunteer in a school as a teacher’s assistant, where you will:

- Help the teacher with planned lessons and activities

- Assist with teaching a variety of subjects

- Help children improve their conversational English skills

- Play games and read to the children in English

- Teach hygiene and life skills

- Help the children with their projects and school work

You can expect to work Monday to Friday each week at least four to six hours a day.

Your Impact

During your stay on this program, you will be able to help in a variety of ways. The school that you will work with provides free English language lessons to children, which will help with their higher education and career prospects later on. Learning language skills from native speakers is a great way to improve pronunciation and conversational abilities, allowing the students to speak more fluently.

I was a medical volunteer in Fewa City Hospital in Pokhara, Nepal.
I am a pre-med graduate from Denmark meaning that I had no previous hands-on experience.
But I still got to observe, participate and help so many people. It was wonderful, challenging, educational and eye-opening. I learned so much ...
