Description

Overview

On this trip, you will have the opportunity to teach English to Thailand’s Buddhist monks in temple schools. Your exact role will vary based on your placement and comfort level, but you can expect to be paired with a local teacher who you will assist with daily lessons. The goals for this project are to provide free language lessons, expose non-English speakers to native speakers to improve their pronunciation and conversational skills, and engage in cross-cultural interaction.

You do not need background experience in education or childcare to sign up, though it would be beneficial and those volunteers with qualifications in either area are highly encouraged to apply. You should have some knowledge of the local language to communicate effectively with students and staff, but this is not a prerequisite. Completing a TEFL course prior to joining the program will be beneficial in providing context and experience in your English teaching placement.

Arrival and Orientation

Once you arrive to Bangkok, local staff will pick you up at the airport and take you to the volunteer house to settle in. The next day, you’ll start a two-day orientation, which will give an overview of Thai culture as well as some basic words and phrases, plus insights into public transport, your day-to-day activities, and much more.

Accommodations

During your stay in Thailand, you will live in a volunteer house close to the city. Dormitory-style, gender-separated rooms house two to four volunteers each, and are air conditioned. The house has western-style bathrooms, hot water, bed linen, kitchen and laundry facilities, and wifi. You will have breakfast provided at the house, and lunch at the program site. You will be able to cook your own dinner or try the restaurants nearby.

Field Conditions

The volunteer house that you’ll stay in is close to the city, which boasts world-renowned food, markets, boat trips, and much more. You’ll have the opportunity to contribute in a variety of ways in this program, with a few of your tasks including:

- Helping to teach English to novice monks

- Playing games and reading to others in English

- Teaching general knowledge and skills

- Assisting the teacher with administrative duties and cleaning the classroom

Your exact duties will depend on the time of year and the needs of the school, and you can expect to work 10 to 20 hours each week. You’re invited to help with planning and other projects at the school, including administrative duties and more.

Your Impact

During your stay on this program, you will be able to help in a variety of ways. Not only will you help local novice monks with their English language skills – particularly pronunciation and conversation – but you also will be able to engage in cross-cultural exchange among a group of people who have led sheltered lives. In turn, you will be able to learn about Buddhist philosophy and Thai culture.

I am inclined to believe that these perfect 5 star reviews are fake. I recently returned from a trip organized by this agency and it was a mess. Not only was I taken advantage of financially but when I reached out to love volunteers they could care less and in ... +more

I was a medical volunteer in Fewa City Hospital in Pokhara, Nepal.
I am a pre-med graduate from Denmark meaning that I had no previous hands-on experience.
But I still got to observe, participate and help so many people. It was wonderful, challenging, educational and eye-opening. I learned so much ...
