On this program, you will be able to make a difference by improving the classrooms, school buildings, and playgrounds for children in Koh Samui. Many local schools are understaffed and under resourced, and because teachers must focus on providing lessons to their students, basic maintenance tasks often are overlooked. Over time, this can cause issues such as blackboards becoming worn out and unusable, or windows and mosquito screens falling into disrepair – there also are larger safety issues that can become a problem in the classrooms and playground if the infrastructure is not properly maintained. As a volunteer, you will be able to alleviate some of the teachers’ burden in maintenance and upkeep. The goals of this project are to maintain classroom facilities for under-resourced schools, improve the future prospects of children by providing them with safe spaces to learn and play, expose locals to new and innovative ideas, and engage in intercultural exchange.
This hands-on program is ideal for those volunteers with some knowledge and experience in construction or anything relating to it, though it is not a prerequisite.
Arrival and Orientation
Once you arrive to Bangkok, local staff will pick you up at the airport and take you to the volunteer guesthouse on Khao San Road, where you will stay for your first two nights. On Saturday, you’ll have an introductory orientation and city tour, and then on Sunday, you will board to coach to Surat Thani, then ferry to Koh Samui Island, where you’ll begin your volunteering placement.
During your stay in Thailand, you will first live in a guesthouse in central Bangkok, which includes all amenities and a welcome meal. Once you arrive to Koh Samui Island, you will stay in one of two volunteer houses located in a small island community. Rooms are split by gender and sleep two to four people at a time. Air conditioning is provided at an additional cost during the summer. Amenities include western-style bathrooms, kitchen and laundry facilities, wifi, and bed linens. During the week, you will have lunch at the school, though you will need to provide your own breakfast and dinner, which you can purchase from local shops or try at local restaurants.
Located on the Thai Gulf, Koh Samui is home to white sand beaches, amazing seafood restaurants, and excellent nightlife. While you’re there, check out the coral beds at Laem Set and Thong Takhian, the Ang Thong marine park, the butterfly garden and aquarium, the snake farm, the Bo Phut monkey theater, and the seated Buddha image on Fan Isle. You’ll have the opportunity to contribute in a variety of ways in this program, with a few of your tasks including:
- Building maintenance
- Networking with local program staff and other volunteers
- Interacting with children
Each day, you can expect to work between four and six hours, and while your schedule may change, it generally will follow this format:
8:15am Pre-start meeting with project supervisor
8:30am Volunteering duties start – you’ll break for lunch in the middle of the day
4:00pm Volunteering duties end
4:15pm Debrief with project supervisor
During the evening, you’re free to explore the area, check out different restaurants, or relax with your fellow volunteers.
The school you will be placed at lacks adequate facilities to effectively teach students, so your help is needed with repairs and maintenance. Your program fee is used for construction and maintenance materials, which will go a long way toward repairing windows, replacing sinks, improving the running water, and much more. Your help will be greatly appreciated by the teachers, who will be able to better focus on their lessons, as well as the students, who will enjoy a safe place to learn and play.

I recently returned from a trip organized by this agency and it was a mess. Not only was I taken advantage of financially but when I reached out to love volunteers they could care less and in fact accused me of being on a Witch Hunt and harassing them for support. It was very unpleasant and unprofessional. The local agency had all current volunteers unhappy with them. The man who locally oversees it lies about costs and takes money from the volunteers. If you try to confront or ask questions he will harass you on your mobile device until you see it his way. I urge you all to not go through love volunteers. Their disregard for the way volunteers are treated is unacceptable. They seem to only care until they have your money and then they do not care. +more

I am a pre-med graduate from Denmark meaning that I had no previous hands-on experience.
But I still got to observe, participate and help so many people. It was wonderful, challenging, educational and eye-opening. I learned so much about medicine, medicine in a Third World country and the Nepali culture. Words cannot describe how much I learned and developed, I enjoyed this so much. But it should be noted that this particular volunteering program is not for those who are afraid to ask questions and take initiative. Your learning and participation is your own responsibility. Noone will be there to hold your hand and explain everything to you. You must ask questions, study at home to understand the cases better, engage yourself and put in the time. The more you give, the more you get!
