This project was created to supply essential medical treatment to Quito’s vulnerable and impoverished residents them and to give them a greater measure of hope. For this program, you will be based in either a Quito hospital, clinic or care facility. In each case, you will be asked to shadow doctors and other medical staff so you can understand how medicinal practice in Ecuador goes on a daily basis. Your level of hands-on involvement in this project will depend on how much education and experience you have. Volunteers will have opportunities to take part in various procedures while assisting local doctors and nurses in their daily duties.

This program allows you to work in rotation with other volunteers, providing differing experiences that expose you to wide-ranging challenges and obstacles within Quito’s medical setup. This volunteering and internship program fits perfectly should you be a medical or pre-medical student seeking important experience, plus it’s ideal for medical professionals in all disciplines. Should you lack requisite experience and education in medicine, you are still welcome to participate. However, you are forewarned that any hands-on involvement will be limited and will largely play an observational role. Still, you can learn so much from watching medical personnel in action dealing with various cases and understanding obstacles they must overcome to provide adequate care.

Arrival and Orientation

You will arrive in Quito on a Sunday and be picked up at the local airport, then delivered to your accommodation. On Monday morning, you will head to the local project offices, where you will be given a detailed orientation to help you transition smoothly. During orientation, a local team representative will meet you to explain local and regional customs, traveling, rules and recommendations, as well as what to expect during your volunteering experience. This meeting will give you the chance to get to know your hosts and fellow volunteers, asking them any last-minute questions you may have. From there, you will be taken to your assigned project site, where you will be introduced to your project team and get acquainted with your accommodation. Simple and effective.

Program Arrival Day: Sunday

Program Departure Day: Saturday

Project volunteers are primarily accommodated in a volunteer apartment of any of our local teams. These apartments are centrally located, within close range of local team offices. These apartments are ‘self-catered,’ ideal for you should you prefer to cook your meals rather than rely on outsiders to prepare your food. And you won’t have to worry about someone invading your space. Giving you a genuine home-made feel, if you will.

All standard amenities are available, from full kitchen materials and modern bathrooms to Wi-Fi (additional charges may apply in some cases). Hot running water is also provided. Though being in a country so close to the Equator, you won’t really need to use it much unless you just prefer it to take a nice, steamy shower to ease any stress. Alternatively, home-stay options are available with one of our friendly host families, where breakfast and dinner are provided.

There are many food options to choose from. With Ecuador’s exotic fruits, unsurpassed fish, and seafood, as well as plenty Andean potatoes to choose from, your taste buds will be duly satisfied with such varied options. Traditional dishes volunteers can try; include Seco de Pollo, Menestra and Ecuadorian Churrasco (a plate consisting of roast meat, a fried egg, chips and fried plantain). There’s even guinea pig for you should you be an unapologetic pork lover. Main course notables include hot sauce aji. While empanadas (warm pastry pockets containing meat or cheese), llapingachos (potato and cheese pancakes) and tempting sweet pastries will also make your mouth water. Yum!

Field Conditions

This project makes a real difference to those in need of urgent medical treatment and consistent sustenance. It provides a once-in-a-lifetime chance for medical students to monitor, observe and assist where appropriate, gaining ample experience and observation time. For more seasoned medical professionals, this program offers a new chapter in your journey to a highly successful career in this field. It provides a highly beneficial and rewarding opportunity for you to share your knowledge and skills to aid people with medical issues in a developing nation.

You will contribute in numerous ways to this program and can expect to carry out these tasks going forward:

– Network with local medical and local project staff.

– Supply medical services to the people in the surrounding areas.

– Help with medical care as appropriate to the volunteer’s skills and training.

7:00 am - Breakfast at your accommodation

7:30 am - Walking or taking a bus to your project site

8:45 am - Pre-start meeting with project supervisor

9:00 am - Volunteering duties start

A tea break and lunch break will take place during the day, but timing will vary based on the local staff needs as well as how many volunteers are available.

2:00 pm - Volunteering duties end

2:15 pm - Debrief with project supervisor

2:30 pm - Walk/bus back to your accommodation

Evenings - Relax, have dinner and enjoy some South American sizzle in central Quito, a bustling and vibrant metropolis where fun never ends. Relieve stresses from your tight schedule and get loose!

My 3 weeks in Costa Rica were extraordinary. At the airport, two members of the local team were waiting for me with two other volunteers that had just arrived. They drove us to the Animal Rescue Center, it was raining really hard, since it was the rain season at that ... +more

Despite their harsh situation, the Palestinian people are the most hospitable and generous people imaginable!

The camp was also very well organized and the volunteers did not want to leave when it was over.
