On this program, you will travel to Cape Town and help to preserve the area’s beautiful natural environment. There are a few different ways that you can help, including hands-on conservation initiatives in parks and reserves, as well as educating children and locals about the environment and how to preserve it. You must be willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions and love working with children and as part of a team. The goals of this program are to preserve Cape Town’s environment, help with projects that make a positive impact on the area, educate future generations about the importance of conservation, and engage in intercultural exchange.

This program is best for those volunteers pursuing a career in animal conservation or environmental studies, or who just have an interest in the field. You do not need background experience to sign up, but you must be flexible and willing to take on a variety of tasks as a volunteer.

Arrival and Orientation

Once you arrive to Cape Town, local staff will pick you up at the airport and take you to your accommodations, where you’ll have a short welcome session. On Monday, you’ll have an orientation to help you learn more about the program and your role in it, as well as local customs, traveling, rules and recommendations, your role in the volunteer program, and more.

During your stay in South Africa, you will live with a local, experienced host family in Grassy Park, in the outer suburbs of Cape Town. While you generally can expect to have your own room, during busier periods you may share your room with other volunteers. This is a wonderful way to immerse yourself in the local culture and learn about the different customs of the area. You’ll have breakfast and dinner provided each day at your homestay, and you can purchase lunch at a local shop.

Field Conditions

As the tourism hotspot of South Africa, Cape Town boasts an amazing hospitality scene, gorgeous beaches, scenic landscapes, and the iconic Table Mountain.

You’ll have the opportunity to contribute in a variety of conservation, research, and education initiatives in this program, with a few of your tasks including:

- Assisting with path clearing projects

- Assisting with removing alien vegetation

- Facilitating awareness and education programs for people of different ages

- Assisting with research projects, such as counting animals

Your schedule will generally follow this format, and you can expect to work four to six hours each weekday:

7:00am Breakfast

7:30am Walk to the project site

8:45am Pre-start meeting with project supervisor

9:00am Volunteering duties start – you’ll have a tea break and lunch break during the day

3:00pm Volunteering duties end

3:15pm Debrief with project supervisor

3:30pm Walk or bus back to the accommodation

During the evening, you’re free to explore the area, check out different restaurants and cafes, or relax with your fellow volunteers.

Your Impact

As a volunteer, you will be able to provide much-needed assistance in research, conservation, and education initiatives in South Africa. I was a medical volunteer in Fewa City Hospital in Pokhara, Nepal.
I am a pre-med graduate from Denmark meaning that I had no previous hands-on experience.
But I still got to observe, participate and help so many people. It was wonderful, challenging, educational and eye-opening. I learned so much ...
