Description

Overview

On this volunteer program, you will be able to improve the lives of at-risk children in Cape Town by introducing them to sports activities and fitness training. As a volunteer, you will work with young people at the primary school level through physical education classes and sports coaching, both of which can go a long way toward boosting these children’s self confidence as well as their teamwork skills. This also helps to keep vulnerable children off the streets after school, ensuring that they are on the right track to a bright future. The goals of this program are to support some of Cape Town's most vulnerable children, help to alleviate health and social issues by engaging the children and sports activities, provide education on healthy lifestyles and teamwork, and engage in intercultural exchange.

This program is best suited for those volunteers who are either pursuing a career in physical education, or who are interested in it; you do not need to have experience to sign up, however.

Arrival and Orientation

Once you arrive to Cape Town, local staff will pick you up at the airport and take you to your accommodations, where you’ll have a short welcome session. On Monday, you’ll have an orientation to help you learn more about the program and your role in it, as well as local customs, traveling, rules and recommendations, your role in the volunteer program, and more.

Accommodations

During your stay in South Africa, you will live in one of two volunteer houses in the suburbs of Cape Town. Both houses can accommodate up to 30 volunteers in five dormitory-style rooms, with an onsite hostel manager. There is a fully-equipped kitchen, communal lounge with satellite TV, a bathroom with four showers and three toilets, and individual lockers. You can purchase wifi at the hostel as well. Self-service breakfast is provided each morning, and usually consists of cereals, bread with different toppings, and fruit. You will have dinner provided at a nearby restaurant each evening with a set weekly menu. Lunch and weekend meals are not provided, but you will be close to restaurants, cafes, and stores. Host family accommodations also are available on request.

The two neighborhoods you can stay in are Sea Point and Observatory:

Sea Point: As one of Cape Town’s more affluent suburbs, this area is home to high-rise apartments as well as upscale restaurants, bars, and cafes. The volunteer hostel that you’ll stay in is located just off of the main road and close to the V&A Waterfront shopping complex, nightlife, the Cape Town City soccer stadium, and the beaches of Clifton and Camps Bay. You also are close to the Sea Point Promenade, a walkway that has amazing views of the ocean, Robben Island, and Table Mountain.

Observatory: This is Cape Town’s most bohemian suburb and is a vibrant, multicultural community that’s popular among students and younger travelers. The volunteer hostel here is a 10-minute walk from Lower Main Road, which is the main entertainment area where you’ll find restaurants, bars, live music, and coffee shops and cafes. Historically, Observatory was one of the few “grey” suburbs during the Apartheid era, where people of mixed race, religion, and cultures were allowed to live together. Close by, you’ll find the Newlands rugby and cricket stadiums, shopping centers, museums, theaters, hiking trails, and Old Biscuit Mill, a vibrant night and day market area.

Your Impact

As a volunteer, you will be able to play a role in supporting at-risk children and ensuring that they can build brighter futures for themselves. By engaging in sports activities alongside their friends, they can become healthy and build healthy habits, learn to work as a team, boost their self-confidence, and be engaged in productive and fun activities off of the streets. They also will be able to gain a greater cultural understanding by working alongside International volunteers like you.

I was a medical volunteer in Fewa City Hospital in Pokhara, Nepal.
I am a pre-med graduate from Denmark meaning that I had no previous hands-on experience.
But I still got to observe, participate and help so many people. It was wonderful, challenging, educational and eye-opening. I learned so much ...
