On this program, you will have the chance to play a positive role in the lives of some of Cape Town's most vulnerable children and youth. As a volunteer, you’ll help to facilitate a weekly extramural activity that engages children in surfing, sandboarding, hiking, swimming, soccer, computer lessons, beach cleanup, and lots more. You'll work with young people aged 12 to 14, who are split into groups of five to 20 participating in this program each week. The goals of this project are to alleviate health and social issues for children by engaging them in sports and outdoor activities, improving their livelihoods and future prospects, providing classes and increasing confidence and teamwork abilities, and engaging in intercultural exchange.
This program is best suited for those volunteers who are either pursuing a career in physical education, or who are interested in it; you do not need to have experience to sign up, however.
Arrival and Orientation
Once you arrive to Cape Town, local staff will pick you up at the airport and take you to your accommodations, where you’ll have a short welcome session. On Monday, you’ll have an orientation to help you learn more about the program and your role in it, as well as local customs, traveling, rules and recommendations, your role in the volunteer program, and more.
You will stay in one of Love Volunteers’ volunteer houses in Table View, with bedrooms sleeping two to five people in mixed-gender rooms unless otherwise requested. The house has electricity, hot water, a kitchen, one or two toilets, a hot shower, and beds with linen. While you and your fellow volunteers are responsible for keeping the house tidy, a cleaning lady will come by a few times per week. The house is walking distance from shops, restaurants, entertainment, bus stops, and the beach, and you’ll receive three meals each day. Breakfast includes cereals, fruit, yogurts, toasts, and spreads; lunch usually consists of bread, cold meats, salad, cheese, spreads, and fruit; and dinner will be a hot meal such as a traditional South African BBQ (braai) and stew (potjies). Tea and coffee will be provided as well, and you’ll have access to a refrigerator for personal snacks.
This program is based in Table View, a suburb of Cape Town and a tourism hotspot with gorgeous beaches and amazing hospitality.
You’ll have the opportunity to contribute in a variety of ways in this program, with a few of your tasks including:
- Teaching kids how to swim, skate, and surf
- Helping to facilitate the lessons and sports or activities
- Assisting in preschools
- Running fun days and sports programs
Your schedule will generally follow this format, and you can expect to work four to six hours each weekday, or eight hours on certain days:
7:30am Walk or bus to the project site
8:45am Pre-start meeting with project supervisor
9:00am Volunteering duties start – you’ll have a tea break and lunch break during the day
3:00pm Volunteering duties end
3:15pm Debrief with project supervisor
3:30pm Walk or bus back to the accommodation
During the evening, you’re free to explore the area, check out different restaurants and cafes, or relax with your fellow volunteers.
As a volunteer, you will be able to play a role in supporting at-risk youth and ensuring that they can build brighter futures for themselves. By engaging in sports activities alongside their friends, they can become healthy and build healthy habits, learn to work as a team, boost their self-confidence, and be engaged in productive and fun activities off of the streets. They also will be able to gain a greater cultural understanding by working alongside International volunteers like you.

I recently returned from a trip organized by this agency and it was a mess. Not only was I taken advantage of financially but when I reached out to love volunteers they could care less and in fact accused me of being on a Witch Hunt and harassing them for support. It was very unpleasant and unprofessional. The local agency had all current volunteers unhappy with them. The man who locally oversees it lies about costs and takes money from the volunteers. If you try to confront or ask questions he will harass you on your mobile device until you see it his way. I urge you all to not go through love volunteers. Their disregard for the way volunteers are treated is unacceptable. They seem to only care until they have your money and then they do not care. +more

I am a pre-med graduate from Denmark meaning that I had no previous hands-on experience.
But I still got to observe, participate and help so many people. It was wonderful, challenging, educational and eye-opening. I learned so much about medicine, medicine in a Third World country and the Nepali culture. Words cannot describe how much I learned and developed, I enjoyed this so much. But it should be noted that this particular volunteering program is not for those who are afraid to ask questions and take initiative. Your learning and participation is your own responsibility. Noone will be there to hold your hand and explain everything to you. You must ask questions, study at home to understand the cases better, engage yourself and put in the time. The more you give, the more you get!
This year was my third placement through Love Volunteers and they are just the best! All of the arrangements they have made have been perfect.
