Description

Overview

On this volunteer trip, you will have the opportunity to work with stray dogs and cats at a nonprofit rescue organization that cares for and sterilizes these animals with the hopes of finding a new home for them. The Philippi farming area in Cape Town is heavily impoverished, with many stray animals left to fend for themselves and too often succumbing to starvation on sickness. The rescue center that you will work with only has a few staff members and relies heavily on volunteers to help out with day-to-day tasks and to provide hands-on assistance for the animals. The goals of this project dark to care for neglected and abandoned animals in the area, find new homes for the animals, sterilize the animals as a response to over-breeding, and engage in intercultural exchange.

This program is best for those volunteers pursuing a career in animal conservation or zoological studies, or who just have an interest in the field. You do not need background experience to sign up, but you must be flexible and willing to take on a variety of tasks as a volunteer.

Arrival and Orientation

Once you arrive to Cape Town, local staff will pick you up at the airport and take you to your accommodations, where you’ll have a short welcome session. On Monday, you’ll have an orientation to help you learn more about the program and your role in it, as well as local customs, traveling, rules and recommendations, your role in the volunteer program, and more.

Accommodations

During your stay in South Africa, you will live with a local, experienced host family with a shared room. This is a wonderful way to immerse yourself in the local culture and learn about the different customs of the area. You’ll have breakfast and dinner provided each day at your homestay, and you can purchase lunch at a local shop.

Field Conditions

Located in Philippi, this farming area is a 30-minute drive from Cape Town, and is sparsely populated compared to the surrounding city. You’ll have the opportunity to contribute in a variety of ways in this hands-on program, with a few of your tasks including:

- Feeding and playing with the animals

- Cleaning animal houses and kennels

- Walking the dogs

- Working on fundraising initiatives

Each day, you can expect to work between four and six hours, and while your schedule may change, it generally will follow this format:

7:00am Breakfast

7:30am Your host family will transport you to your placement

7:45am Pre-start meeting with project supervisor

8:00am Volunteering duties start – you’ll have a tea break and lunch break during the day

5:00pm Volunteering duties end

5:15pm Debrief with project supervisor

5:30pm Your host family will collect you

During the evening, you’re free to explore the area, check out different restaurants and cafes, or relax with your fellow volunteers.

Your Impact

As a volunteer, you will have the opportunity to take on a variety of hands-on tasks to help care for dogs and cats in the rescue center. This program is very important to maintaining the animals’ health and curbing overpopulation of stray animals by spaying and neutering them, caring for them if they are sick or injured, and providing homes for them with loving families.

I am inclined to believe that these perfect 5 star reviews are fake. I recently returned from a trip organized by this agency and it was a mess. Not only was I taken advantage of financially but when I reached out to love volunteers they could care less and in ... +more

I was a medical volunteer in Fewa City Hospital in Pokhara, Nepal.
I am a pre-med graduate from Denmark meaning that I had no previous hands-on experience.
But I still got to observe, participate and help so many people. It was wonderful, challenging, educational and eye-opening. I learned so much ...
