INLEXCA partners with rural schools and after school projects where volunteers are needed to support a class or to teach it independently. Volunteers can teach subjects such as English, Math, Computer literacy, sports, and more. Depending on what is needed at the time volunteers may be asked to teach a specific subject or to assist a teacher in it.This program is particularly important as it gives another generation a chance to break the cycle of poverty through education.
Requirements: Basic Spanish. Good command of English if teaching English.
Arrival and Orientation
Orientation is held the day after your arrival with all the volunteers that have arrived on the same day as you and it is followed by a walking tour of San Ramon de Alajuela. We will discuss topics like:
– Who we are
– The country
– Your program
– Health and safety precautions
– Living with a host family
– Exchanging currency
– Information on Spanish lessons
– Do's and don'ts
The orientation takes most of the day and is vital to understanding the country, the program, and to ensure you have a great experience. This will be the time to ask questions, learn about your time here and meet staff and other participants. You will be informed of the time of orientation upon arrival.
Your host family is eager to welcome you and integrate you into their family, traditions and day-to-day life. Living with a host family is different from staying in a hostel or guest house as you will be given the opportunity to integrate into an authentic cultural experience as well as improve your Spanish while sharing your culture as well. In a way, you will become a part of the family, so please remember to respect the house rules, help in the house and treat each other with respect. The host family will give you 2 meals per day (unless specified otherwise), usually breakfast and dinner and for lunch you will cover the cost of by either buying food for yourself, eat outside or pay the host family a little extra for lunch. Laundry is not included in the program. You can ask your host family to use their washing facilities to wash your own laundry or sometimes, host families are willing to do the laundry for an extra charge. This varies from family to family, so we leave this decision up to you.
As a volunteer on INLEX/CA’s Costa Rica English teaching program, you will have the chance to work with underprivileged children in a school or after-school program. A few of your activities will include:
– Teaching English lessons
– Helping local teachers with carrying out their English lessons
– Creating games and activities to help children learn English
– Assisting with other classroom lessons such as math and science
You’re also invited to take Spanish classes as part of your trip to Costa Rica, which will help to give you a truly immersive experience. To sign up, you should have intermediate Spanish language ability.
This is a great volunteer opportunity for people who are proficient in English, who are willing and able to teach subjects at the elementary school level, and who are energetic and would like to work with children. By learning English, these children will have greater educational and career opportunities later in life, allowing them to build bright futures for themselves, their families, and their community.

INLEXCA´s mission is to strengthen human resources in Central America through volunteer programs, educational tours and internships. In addition to this, INLEXCA provides opportunities to students, professionals, and interested persons from countries outside the Central American region, to better understand the reality and challenges faced by the countries in the region. We work towards : -Sustainability in the projects and communities that we work in. -Programs that promote cultural exchange. -Safe and affordable programs. -Strengthening and empowering communities. -Authentic experiences for our volunteers. -Facilitating education. Our office was set up by former Peace Corps staff in Guatemala in 2005, who wanted to provide flexible programs that would allow prospective volunteers to choose how long they wanted to volunteer for and in what area they wanted to focus on. This flexibility allows our participants the option to commit for as long as they want, unlike other programs that required one or two year commitments. We do this because we believe in the principle that every volunteer can make a difference, no matter how long they volunteer for, together, we can help communities grow and become stronger. Many years and happy volunteers later, we work with key partner projects to develop communities in each of our destinations. INLEXCA is member of the Federation in International Living and abides by their standard of quality.
