INLEXCA partners with various day care centers aimed to support single parents or parents from low income backgrounds. Daycares are open in the morning and part of the afternoon allowing parents to work while their children are looked after, receive basic education, and are in a safe environment. Volunteers joining the childcare program in Costa Rica can help these underfunded institutions partly financed by the government. Participants in this program must have a patient and friendly disposition as well as be able to be proactive and keep the children active.

Requirements : Basic Spanish. Volunteers must provide a police background check.

Arrival and Orientation

Orientation is held the day after your arrival with all the volunteers that have arrived on the same day as you and it is followed by a walking tour of San Ramon de Alajuela. We will discuss topics like:

– Who we are

– The country

– Your program

– Health and safety precautions

– Living with a host family

– Transportation

– Expectations

– Responsibilities

– Exchanging currency

– Communication

– Information on Spanish lessons

– Do's and don'ts

The orientation takes most of the day and is vital to understanding the country, the program, and to ensure you have a great experience. This will be the time to ask questions, learn about your time here and meet staff and other participants. You will be informed of the time of orientation upon arrival.

Your host family is eager to welcome you and integrate you into their family, traditions and day-to-day life. Living with a host family is different from staying in a hostel or guest house as you will be given the opportunity to integrate into an authentic cultural experience as well as improve your Spanish while sharing your culture as well. In a way, you will become a part of the family, so please remember to respect the house rules, help in the house and treat each other with respect. The host family will give you 2 meals per day (unless specified otherwise), usually breakfast and dinner and for lunch you will cover the cost of by either buying food for yourself, eat outside or pay the host family a little extra for lunch. Laundry is not included in the program. You can ask your host family to use their washing facilities to wash your own laundry or sometimes, host families are willing to do the laundry for an extra charge. This varies from family to family, so we leave this decision up to you.

Field Conditions

Hola! If you are receiving Spanish Lessons, this will be shown in weeks. Each week has 20 hours, divided into blocks of 4 hours per day and classes are received Monday to Friday. The lessons are competency based, so you will be placed in a level that matches your language skills. You may have individual classes or in small groups of up to three students. The Spanish lessons are geared towards giving you the right language tools to work in your project. The lessons will include terms for your type of project, games, local lingo, and field trips that will help your Spanish level. Don't expect a college level class or to be able to write a thesis in Spanish though, the aim of our classes is that you speak fluently, learn how to write, read, understand, and most importantly are able to handle day-to-day situations you will be facing in your program. Your classes will be held in our school in San Ramon de Alajuela. School hours begin at 8am unless specified otherwise, so please be on time. We only reschedule classes for holidays or illness. Our aim is that you learn and have fun while doing so.

INLEXCA´s mission is to strengthen human resources in Central America through volunteer programs, educational tours and internships. In addition to this, INLEXCA provides opportunities to students, professionals, and interested persons from countries outside the Central American region, to better understand the reality and challenges faced by the countries in the region. We work towards : -Sustainability in the projects and communities that we work in. -Programs that promote cultural exchange. -Safe and affordable programs. -Strengthening and empowering communities. -Authentic experiences for our volunteers. -Facilitating education. Our office was set up by former Peace Corps staff in Guatemala in 2005, who wanted to provide flexible programs that would allow prospective volunteers to choose how long they wanted to volunteer for and in what area they wanted to focus on. This flexibility allows our participants the option to commit for as long as they want, unlike other programs that required one or two year commitments. We do this because we believe in the principle that every volunteer can make a difference, no matter how long they volunteer for, together, we can help communities grow and become stronger. Many years and happy volunteers later, we work with key partner projects to develop communities in each of our destinations. INLEXCA is member of the Federation in International Living and abides by their standard of quality.
