Description

Overview

INLEXCA partners with various day care centers aimed to support single parents or parents from low income backgrounds. Daycares are open in the morning and part of the afternoon allowing parents to work while their children are looked after, receive basic education, and are in a safe environment. Volunteers joining the childcare program in Costa Rica can help these underfunded institutions partly financed by the government. Participants in this program must have a patient and friendly disposition as well as be able to be proactive and keep the children active.

Requirements : Basic Spanish. Volunteers must provide a police background check.

Arrival and Orientation

Orientation is held the day after your arrival with all the volunteers that have arrived on the same day as you and it is followed by a walking tour of San Ramon de Alajuela. We will discuss topics like:

– Who we are

– The country

– Your program

– Health and safety precautions

– Living with a host family

– Transportation

– Expectations

– Responsibilities

– Exchanging currency

– Communication

– Information on Spanish lessons

– Do's and don'ts

The orientation takes most of the day and is vital to understanding the country, the program, and to ensure you have a great experience. This will be the time to ask questions, learn about your time here and meet staff and other participants. You will be informed of the time of orientation upon arrival.

Accommodations

Your host family is eager to welcome you and integrate you into their family, traditions and day-to-day life. Living with a host family is different from staying in a hostel or guest house as you will be given the opportunity to integrate into an authentic cultural experience as well as improve your Spanish while sharing your culture as well. In a way, you will become a part of the family, so please remember to respect the house rules, help in the house and treat each other with respect. The host family will give you 2 meals per day (unless specified otherwise), usually breakfast and dinner and for lunch you will cover the cost of by either buying food for yourself, eat outside or pay the host family a little extra for lunch. Laundry is not included in the program. You can ask your host family to use their washing facilities to wash your own laundry or sometimes, host families are willing to do the laundry for an extra charge. This varies from family to family, so we leave this decision up to you.

Field Conditions

As a volunteer on INLEX/CA’s Costa Rica Child Care program, you will have the chance to work with children in low-income daycare centers and orphanages. A few of your activities will include:

– Playing with the children

– Helping staff with their daily chores

– Helping to prepare meals for the children

– Teaching the children

– Helping to develop educational materials

You’re also invited to take Spanish classes as part of your trip to Costa Rica, which will help to give you a truly immersive experience.

Your Impact

Organization

INLEXCA´s mission is to strengthen human resources in Central America through volunteer programs, educational tours and internships. In addition to this, INLEXCA provides opportunities to students, professionals, and interested persons from countries outside the Central American region, to better understand the reality and challenges faced by the countries in the region. We work towards : -Sustainability in the projects and communities that we work in. -Programs that promote cultural exchange. -Safe and affordable programs. -Strengthening and empowering communities. -Authentic experiences for our volunteers. -Facilitating education. Our office was set up by former Peace Corps staff in Guatemala in 2005, who wanted to provide flexible programs that would allow prospective volunteers to choose how long they wanted to volunteer for and in what area they wanted to focus on. This flexibility allows our participants the option to commit for as long as they want, unlike other programs that required one or two year commitments. We do this because we believe in the principle that every volunteer can make a difference, no matter how long they volunteer for, together, we can help communities grow and become stronger. Many years and happy volunteers later, we work with key partner projects to develop communities in each of our destinations. INLEXCA is member of the Federation in International Living and abides by their standard of quality.
