Volunteer in Peru and Explore Machu Picchu

Cusco, Peru Children & Youth Development

Travel and volunteer in the historically rich city of Cusco! On this program, you will work with children, teenagers, and young adults, guiding them in art, sports, music, science, reading, English, theater, and much more. The exact projects that you will take on as a volunteer will vary depending on your experience and skills, but rest assured there is something for everyone on this wonderful program! Immerse yourself in Peruvian culture while engaging in once-in-a-lifetime cultural exchange where you can both teach and learn from local students.

Outside of volunteering, you will have opportunities to go rafting, zip lining, and even trekking through the Andes mountains to Machu Picchu. There are two treks that you can choose from: a four-day Inca Trail Trek, where you will hike along original stone staircases of the Inca Trail; or a Lares Trek, where you’ll hike along high-altitude trails and visit local Inca villages.

As a volunteer, you will have an impact in two main areas: teaching and school support, as well as cross-cultural learning. At the school where you will volunteer, you can help children, teens, and young adults develop and strengthen their skills in art, reading, computer literacy, English language, and much more by tutoring, helping with homework, and other activities. The socio-cultural exchange also is an area where you’ll have a lasting impact - the students will learn about your way of life while you’ll learn about theirs, and what you have in common as well as what you can bring back home to teach your friends, family, and community.

Field conditions

Depending on when you visit, the average temperature in Cusco can range from 52 degrees to 45 degrees - if you visit April through October, you might not see too much rainfall, while November through March you might expect to see about 15 rainy days per month. When you visit Machu Picchu, expect a little of everything. The location of the ruins means weather is influenced by competing forces coming from the rainforest and the highlands. Within a span of hours, you can have bright sun, deep clouds or strong wind gusts.
