Two-Week Volunteer Abroad Trip to San Jose, Costa Rica

San Jose, Costa Rica Sports & Recreation

Travel to Costa Rica and spend five days volunteering with a sea turtle project that aims to ensure these creatures are around for future generations to admire. After that, hike through misty cloud forests and get your heart racing on activities in lush wilderness. Give some of your time to this beautiful country and a worthy cause, and you'll be rewarded with an experience you can treasure forever. Gain a real sense of accomplishment and take home much more than photographs.

As a volunteer, you will help contribute to sea turtle protection. The goals for this program are to:

– Protect adult female turtles nesting in Montezuma from wildlife and human predators, beach erosion, and flooding by constructing a hatchery and going on nightly beach patrols

– Collect data on turtle species, hatchlings, nesting patterns, seasonal factors, and more

– Distribute biological and conservation findings on sea turtles to local educational centers in the area

You can expect to work between six and 10 hours per day depending on project needs.

Field conditions

For the five days you’re on this project, depending on the season, you’ll help Bamba Experience’s local partners that are dedicated to sea turtle conservation by organizing nighttime beach patrols, reinforcing the barriers of the hatcheries, monitoring the baby turtle hatchery, and other maintenance tasks. During nesting season from mid-June to November, you will work directly with turtles, and in the low season from December to early June, your work will focus more on the facility and beach maintenance.

Once you complete your volunteer project at the turtle conservation center, you will continue on to adventure for the rest of your trip. A few of your activities will include:

– Traveling to Arenal Volcano and relaxing in Baldi Hot Springs

– Hiking to La Fortuna waterfall

– Visiting the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, where you can see animals, explore Santa Elena Town, or just relax

– Touring a farm and learning about the process involved in sugar cane cultivation

– Going zip lining through the forest

Arrival and orientation

You’ll arrive to San Jose Airport, where you’ll be greeted by the Bamba Experience team and transferred along to your hostel in San Jose for the evening. The next day, you will travel to Montezuma beach, located on the Nicoya peninsula on the northern pacific coast of Costa Rica, where you’ll get settled in at the volunteer house and learn about important turtle conservation work and your role in the project.
