Based in the gorgeous Southern Sri Lanka, this placement is ideal for medical and pre-med students who would like to learn about medical practices in a developing country.

Arrival and Orientation

On arrival all participants will be given training and orientation including safety training. Our medical project coordinator conducts comprehensive project-specific training, including an overview of the Sri Lankan medical industry, common practices, customs, code of conduct, rules, etc. The medical coordinator also conducts weekly learning sessions through interactive discussions on relevant topics, monitors day-to-day development of the participants and reviews and assigns project task sheets to each individual.

Volunteers will be staying in a beautiful volunteer villa in Galle with other volunteers. You will be in a shared room.

Field Conditions

This program caters to medical, nursing and dentistry participants of all levels and provides a comprehensive insight into the medical system of Sri Lanka with immense learning opportunities. From beginners who have an interest (but no experience) in the field, to advanced 5th year students looking for specific specializations, we have all the bases covered. Participants working in the public sector have access to a larger and wider network of medical professionals, range and volume of patients and exposures to comprehensive set of wards and special units that cannot come close to being matched in the private sector. There is also a greater need for future doctors, nurses and dentists to assist in the public sector as the sheer volume of patients they get is overwhelming and from lower socio-economic classes, where the need for support is greater.

Your Impact

As a volunteer you will be giving a helping hand and assisting at very busy hospitals. This program will also allow you to network with global medical teams from who will be willing to teach you and exchange notes.

VJs was very supportive and organised. If we needed help with anything, hospital related or otherwise, they would always have a friendly face and research it for us and give us the information as soon as they could.

The orientation was very helpful and informative for cultural immersion.
