Medical Electives in Tropical Kerala, India

Cochin, India Health & Medicine

Program

Description

This program caters to medical and nursing participants of all levels (enrolled at Medical School or University already) and provides a comprehensive insight into the medical system of India with immense learning opportunities. From beginners in Year 1 who have an interest (but no experience) in the field, to advanced 5th year students looking for specific specializations, we have all the bases covered. Kerala is the only state in India which has a reputation of quality public healthcare and medical services, which is remarkable. In recent decades however the dependance on public health care has declined substantially and private sector hospitals are now more prominent. Participants working in the private sector will have access to a larger and wider network of medical professionals, range and volume of patients and exposures to comprehensive set of wards and special units that they would not have access to in the public sector. As the private sector hospitals are extremely competitive there is also a greater volume of future doctors and nurses as the sheer volume of patients they get is increasing. We place all medical and nursing students (those who have at least some university experience) at the private hospital, where they get exposure to a wide range of patients and cases available in Kerala, all under the watchful guidance of a professional and caring team of doctors and nurses. Participants will have the opportunity to get exposure across a range of wards such as General Medicine, Paediatrics & Neonatology, Imaging & Radiology, Emergency, Anaesthesiology, Oncology, Cardiology, Neurology/Neurosurgery, Gastroenterology, Urology, Gynaecology, Surgery, Orthopaedics.

Impact

You will not only learn a lot from the medical teams on ground but have the unique opportunity to also build your resume and network of medical contacts globally. For the hospitals they love to have students from around the world as this helps them to learn from you as well about the medicine practices in your country.

Field conditions

You will be placed in reputed hospitals and get the chance to also participate for community work if you want to do that. At the hospital you will have the opportunity to get exposure across a range of wards such as General Medicine, Paediatrics & Neonatology, Imaging & Radiology, Emergency, Anaesthesiology, Oncology, Cardiology, Neurology/Neurosurgery, Gastroenterology, Urology, Gynaecology, Surgery, Orthopaedics.

Arrival and orientation

Program Manager provides detailed introduction and culture training on arrival along with an area orientation tour. Our local coordinator conducts comprehensive project- specific training, including an overview of the Indian medical industry, customs, code of conduct, rules, etc. Besides taking the students on their first day to the hospital, our local coordinator conducts weekly meetings and monitors day-to-day development of the participants. There is also a dedicated coordinator at the hospital who is assists with clinical rotations and any issues on site. Local transportation to and from the hospital is included each day.

Volunteering Journeys is a social enterprise that provides the global youth of today with responsible and experiential travel opportunities through sustainable and impactful volunteer programs in the areas of education, healthcare and marine & animal conservation. Our two marquee locations are Galle, Sri Lanka and Kerala, India - both tropical destinations known for their raw beauty, deep culture/history and hospitable people. What separates us from others is our global mindset, local knowhow and ability to deliver wonderful experiences to our young travellers. We are ground operators and offer truly authentic projects be it hospital placements for medical/nursing students, working with special needs communities, women's empowerment, teaching english to children or Buddhist monks, or working on serious elephant, dog care or sea-turtle conservation projects. We also offer unique adventure & sightseeing tours in these locations, which can be done on a standalone basis or combined with any of our volunteering programs. All our programs are created and managed with the goal of enhancing young travellers' learning and having fun, whilst providing sustainable development and aid to the communities we serve.

  • Excellent homestay experience, wonderful integration with Nepalese culture. More focus could be applied to organisation, informing students prior to arrival and during placement. Less emphasis on encouraging travel, more on an excellent placement experience.
