How are projects chosen for Abroadly?

Abroadly partners with reputable organizations worldwide that offer meaningful volunteer, intern, and teach abroad trips. We want to make sure that any program you sign up for is well-organized, safe, and impactful. A few things we look for in our partner organizations include:

- History and leadership

- Awards, accreditations, and accolades

- Participant safety and support

- Consistently positive participant reviews

- Demonstrated track record of community engagement, sustainable program management, and program improvement

- Above-and-beyond extras, such as travel insurance, cultural immersion activities, and alumni engagement opportunities

Can I get in touch with other volunteers who have been on these projects?

Due to privacy reasons, we are not able to directly connect you with travelers who have gone on previous trips. However, we feature thousands of reviews about programs on our website.

What happens after I apply for a program?

After you submit your application and refundable deposit, your application will be sent along to the program provider for the project that you’ve chosen. Within two business days you will hear directly from that organization about whether your application has been accepted and what your next steps are to get started with planning your trip abroad. If your application is not accepted, Abroadly and the program provider will contact you and your deposit will be refunded in full within 14 days.

When will I hear if I’m accepted into a volunteer program?

You will hear from your program provider within two business days of applying. Depending on the project, you may need to send along more information to the provider to ensure your application is accepted - this is particularly important for trips that require knowledge or experience in the program area, foreign language skills, or other information such as background checks or references. No matter what trip you apply for on Abroadly, you will hear from your chosen program provider directly about the status of your application.

Am I locked into a start date or project length, or can I change either after I apply?

This is dependent on the trip that you apply for, but in many cases, program providers are happy to work with you on adjusting your travel dates as needed. The main exception you might run into is your program start date: if the project you’ve applied for has a specified start date on Mondays year-round, for example, you are strongly advised to ensure you arrive in time for that start date. Your program provider will work with you to make sure your travel details are covered, but when in doubt, be sure to ask them for help. If you have mistakenly chosen the wrong travel dates or trip length on your application and have not yet been contacted by your chosen program provider, please contact us.

Is there a minimum age requirement for Abroadly’s programs?

You can find the minimum age requirement for any program featured on Abroadly directly above that program’s description. Most programs have a minimum age of 18.

Is there a limit to the number of programs I can apply for?

There is no limit to the number of programs you can apply for on Abroadly.

Can I sign up for a project with a friend/a group/my family?

Many of our program partners offer group, couples, and family trips. Please contact us for helping booking your trip.

What is the Abroadly scholarship?

Each quarter Abroadly offers two $500 scholarships for travelers embarking on a volunteer, teach, or intern abroad program. When you submit a program application through Abroadly, you can opt to have your essays added to our scholarship pool. Winners can use their scholarship funds for any part of their travel, including their program fee, airfare, travel insurance, clothing and gear, or anything else that you can think of relating to your travels.

What is Abroadly’s refund policy?

Your deposit is refundable if you are not accepted by the program or your visa is declined. You will receive a refund within 14 days of notification about your declined application.

If I am not accepted into a program, will I get my deposit back? When and how will I get my refund?

Yes, you will receive a full refund of the deposit you paid through Abroadly if you are not accepted into the program that you applied for. Your refund will be applied to the card that you used to pay your deposit within 14 days of notification about your application status.

If I decide not to go on a program, will I get my deposit back?

If you change your mind and would rather not go on a program that you applied for, your deposit may be used toward another program on Abroadly.

How do I pay the rest of the program fee?

The rest of your program fee will be paid directly to the program partner that will be hosting your trip abroad. Once they receive your application from Abroadly and you are accepted as a volunteer, intern, or teacher on that project, you will work with that organization to arrange payment of your final program fee.

When is the final program fee due, and can I pay in installments?

This is dependent on the project that you apply for and the organization that you are traveling with. After our project partner receives your application, they will get in touch with you for next steps - if you have questions about the program fee and payment process, they can help you.

What if I get sick or hurt while abroad, or want to end my trip for another reason?

If you get sick, hurt, or otherwise need to cut your trip short, the host organization that you’re traveling with will help you figure out your next steps.

Will someone pick me up from the airport when I arrive?

Most of the programs that you can apply for through Abroadly offer airport pickup. For more information, check the “Arrival and Orientation” section of the program page.

Where will I live during the project?

You can find information about housing under the “Accommodations” section of each program page on Abroadly.

Can I go on tours, side trips, or other activities while on my volunteer, intern, or teach abroad program?

Many of the programs featured on Abroadly include optional or included side trips and activities. For those that don’t, you’re encouraged to get in touch with the program partner offering that trip for recommendations for activities and side trips that you can plan outside of volunteering, interning, or teaching.

What if I want to change my program or destination after I’ve already signed up?

If you’ve been accepted into a volunteer, intern, or teach abroad program and would like to adjust your trip, please get in touch with the organization that you are traveling with to see about your options. If you have mistakenly sent an application for the wrong program and have not yet been contacted by your chosen program provider, please contact us.
